I met the Stricklins while photographing a three-part series about family owned forestland living in Astoria, Ore. working at The Daily Astorian some 12 years ago. One of my favorite images I captured was while visiting with Robert Stricklin and his daughter Pheraby Elizabeth Stricklin. There are other photos that captured the imagination and lifestyle of the Strickin’s, but this one image stood alone and ran six columns on page one of the newspaper.

Through meeting Robert our friendship would begin leading us to reunite through modern technology on Facebook. And through this medium I recently learned of my friend’s daughter’s passing leaving us all too soon at the tender age of 16.

My recollection is of an inquisitive little girl who brought to life a memorable photograph who enjoyed spending time in a flower garden just as much as she did riding on her father’s shoulders.

Hidden Treasures: Pheraby Stricklin, 5, picks daffodils on a bright sunny afternoon in the family flower garden.

Spring Splash is an event which marks the end of the ski season at Winter Park Ski Resort. One hundred participants attempt to ski or snowboard across a pond of water after going off a ramp on one of the Winter Park ski runs.

Many of the participants dress up in costume which always gets a charge from those watching. And amazingly several do make it across the water.

The Jackalope Jump is a fundraiser for Special Olympics in which participants jump into an icy cold pond (Hunk Finn Pond here in Laramie). Some teams come up with clever names and catchy costumes to wear before taking the plung. This year’s event was the warmest yet as there was no ice on the pond to be broken up. Here are a few of my favorites:

“Hurry up and take my picture because this is the suit I want to be buried in”, Kenny Sailors jokingly said! Mr. Sailors and I just met for a photo shoot at the Arena-Auditorium with his agent/friend Bill Schrage and Tim Harkins with University of Wyoming Media Relations. At age 91 Sailors is the oldest living college basketball player to play in the NCAA tournament. Sailors and his teammates beat Georgetown to win the 1943 championship. This legendary man also developed the one-hand jump shot as is known in today’s game.

My photo assignment was taken for an article that ran in the 2012 NCAA Final Four basketball program.

Kenny Sailors stands next to a statue of Steamboat with the Arena-Auditorium in the background.

After the photo shoot was over Bill asked Kenny to walk down (from concourse level) to greet Wyoming Cowgirls basketball player Ashley Sickles taking practice shots. The two walked down lots of stairs, briefly visiting with Sickles and walking straight back up. As I watched with Tim Harkins I said “I purposely try to avoid those steps”, Harkins said “I do too”.

Sailors didn’t take one deep breath walking back up, I couldn’t believe it! At his age, but also with an altitude of 7,220 feet above sea level this high of elevation will keep some athletes from being recruited to play here in this mountain college town.

Today my colleague Eve Newman and I spoke with a Beitel Elementary School fifth-grade class about we do as a reporter and photographer at the Laramie Boomerang as well as what we enjoy most about our jobs. Shortly thereafter we were treated to lunch at a new local restaurant having lunch with students Krisanna Andrews and Sienna Powell. The two were selected of their classmates to go to lunch with Eve and I after the two paired up on a project to simulate a mock interview. So much of what we do in community journalism involves our public schools and I am always appreciative of those teachers, parents and students who entrust us to do our jobs with children.
